International Congress on Illustration
Valencia (Spain) / June 19th, 20th and 21st / 2013
Faculty of Fine Arts / Polytechnic University of Valencia
Biennial congress which goal is to generate a space for reflection around visual culture and image in their different applications, stressing the proximity between diverse art disciplines and their relations. To that purpose, the analysis of the graphic image will be approached from different perspectives and fields beyond illustration itself, such as design, photography, painting and animation… analyzing their relation, their renovation or their media presence.
OUT OF THE PAGE
This first edition of the congress starts off with the title Fuera de página (Out of the page), as a metaphor of the study of illustration from points of view that widen the traditional concept of an autonomous discipline, linked to skill and style, which are characteristic of drawing and painting techniques. In the expressive mark of the illustrator these are essential elements. At the same time, the vanishing of visual expression limits have encourage the presence of illustration in a social environment beyond the typical publishing image, linked to a place on the printed press. Such is the vitality of illustration these days that it forces us to consider several fields for debate. The relationship with technological visual procedures, lead by photography and all kinds of collages and digital feedback. The success of hybrid trends and techniques, such as handmade or illustration using objects. The connections with design and advertising, Also, its participation in the social and political debate, through cartoons, newspaper illustration, graphic novel or even through the net or on the streets; in protests and demands that are coming from a new and uncertain frame of social participation.
PROGRAM OF ACTIVITIES
The program of the Congress includes different activities and events, among them the EXHIBITION titled Abierto todo el día (Open all day), which will display notebooks and original work of illustrators Isidro Ferrer and Pep Carrio (in the Exhibitions hall Josep Renau of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Valencia).
This frame for reflection that Ilustrafic actually is, will be coupled with other events such as the FORO DE EMPRESAS (ENTERPRISE FORUM), which aims at putting in touch illustrator and industry; as well as the CREATIVE WORKSHOPS that will be taught by highly regarded artists in the field of illustration.
